12 Reasons Why You Should Dress Up (Or Be A Fashionista)

About two weeks ago, someone made a comment that got me thinking deeply about the things we wear and WHY we wear them. The person was indirectly asking "why are YOU looking so gorgeous?" as if wearing something cute that makes you feel good is a "weird" thing to do!

Being a blogger (lol), I was inspired to make a post to help you in those awkward moments where you're being asked why you wear what you wear too.

Why Dress Up

Quite a number of people assume you need to follow the latest trends to be fashionable, but nah. If you mix a plain white t-shirt with denim one day and a black pencil skirt another day, you've got two outfits right there!

All it takes is for you to be creative and intentional.

I firmly believe in "dressing up".

Dressing up is something that extends to all areas of our lives because our clothes are a large part of WHO we are. Your clothes define your personality to others as they largely influence your interaction with them.

So why dress up? Here are 13 good reasons:

1. Because fashion is a medium of self expression.

So each time you dress up, ask yourself, "What am I trying to say?"

You have to dress the Gospel. The clothes you wear and the way you groom yourself will affect the way people hear what you say. It will subconsciously tell them if you’re like them or if you’re different. It will determine whether they listen or ignore. Trust or distrust. Run or stay.

2. Because you never know who you'll run into. Kenedy at the bus stop? Your ex? The president? Hey, stranger things have happened.

3. Because you might never improve your taste for fashion or discover your style statement if your default look is "I wear anything". You have to put some effort.

4. Because first impression matters. People see what you wear first before they care to know who you are or what you stand for.

5. Because dressing up helps you purge out friends who don't love you for you. If they have a problem with the way you dress, they're not the kind of friends you want around.

6. Because cute clothes and accessories are a great conversation starter. Standing at the bus stop is never boring. When you look good, people notice. Wear something beautiful and people will ask you where you got it or how you made it.

There is a beautiful blue bag I "stole" from my mum. Every time I step out with it, I find a new girl friend or companion at the bus-stop.

7. Because it's fun and exciting. It can literally boost your mood!

8. Because dressing up helps you make fashion mistakes and get past them for the next day. Mistakes happen and that's how you learn what not to wear.

9. Because it kind of annoys people. Lol. Seriously. When you dress up, it’s actually kind of fun to see their reactions! (like the one who asks why you’re so dressed up for apparently no reason . . .) Anyways, that's the more reason to keep doing it! Whether they’re jealous or they are just purely confused with you . . . it sure keeps you looking interesting!

Quick Advice: DON'T OVER DO IT sha. Try and separate runway fashion from everyday fashion. Be yourself and find clothing that you feel represent you, and make you feel beautiful and confident.

10. Nothing feels better than walking down the street in an outfit that makes you feel awesome. You know!

11. Because fashion is one of the rare instances where art comes alive. Waking up everyday and assembling clothing items keeps your creative juice flowing.

12. Because nothing beats the rush you feel when you look in the mirror and LOVE what you see. You just know you're going to have a super great day!

13. Because you just want to dress up. That's that.

Never let anyone talk you out of dressing up.

Purpose is everything, in style and in life. I start my personal style journey every day on purpose — by expressing who I am and what I represent — my business and my values. Being passionate about these things makes me put effort on how I present myself. I love to dress up.

Wait. Can we also add that Jesus was a fashionista while on earth?

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”
- Luke 19: 23-24

Why would they gamble over Jesus' clothes when they could have easily burnt it or tore it into pieces? Think about it.

Your turn, Why do YOU dress up?

Do you make an effort dressing up every day? What inspires you to put effort into your look?
