The Memorial Stones In Your Journey To The Promised Land

When life is going well, we are tempted to think that we can pretty much take care of ourselves. We tend to neglect God after getting our blessings, our victory.

The PYH Series: Joshua 4.

The Memorial Stones

The major take for me in Joshua chapter 4 is that God wants us, His people to ALWAYS remember what He has done.

Flash back to Joshua 3, we see God performing a miracle at the Jordan River. The river was at flood stage, but its waters flowing downstream were cut off and stood up "in a heap," allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground on their way to the promised land.

In Joshua 4, God then commanded Joshua to have twelve stones taken up from the depths of the river bed and stacked up by the side of the river.

"This is to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” (Joshua 4:6-7)

The stones were to serve as a memorial of the great miracle. They were to remember His divine action on their behalf.

Chapter 4 was to save the memory of what happened in chapter 3.

God knows how we humans think and that's why He instructs Joshua in to build a memorial. So that each time the Israelites saw the stones, they would be reminded that they had not crossed the Jordan on their own ability or by their own strength but BECAUSE of God.

This is a challenge for us to spend sometime thinking through our memorial stones, let them draw us closer to God and remind us of His faithfulness.

We need tangible reminders of what He has done for us. We tend to forget those times God showed Himself mighty in our lives.

When our lives are going well, we are tempted to think that we can pretty much take care of ourselves. Our delusion of self-sufficiency clouds our memories of when we needed God and He responded. On the other hand, when life seems dark and scary, our fear can seduce into believing that God is impotent to deal with our present challenges.

Sweetie, what is your memorial stone?

What is that thing that serves as a reminder of what God has done in your family, your career, your finance, your relationship, your business and your life in totality?

Is there a significant time, a marker in your life, a memorial, that you recall, that still speaks to you, that reminds you God was present in that moment, that God was with you to help, that God was too real and showed you a way out?

Today, like me, the most encouraging thing you might need to hear is that God is still with you. Get that memory imprinted in your heart.

We need our own "pile of stones" to remember who He truly is and what He has done for us.

What is your pile of stones for last year? Last month? Last week? Yesterday?

Whether it has been a good season or a difficult one for you:

- Where have you seen God at work in your life and in the lives of those around you?
- How have you seen God pruning you, shaping you, and maturing you to more like His Son?
- What incidents can you point to that give you clues about His calling on your life?

This post is full of questions because I want you to have some reflection.

Sweetie, your stones might require to do something creative - create a tangible reminder of God's activity in your life. Make a list, a collage, a blog, a scrapbook page, a collection of objects, a shadowbox display, or anything that is your unique creative expression of remembrance and thankfulness.

Thank God for what He has done for you and yours so far, and for what He is going to do in the time to come!

Have a great week!
Stay inspired.
Stay positive.
Stay grateful.
