What I Wore: My Brother's Ankara Shirt & Shokoto

I have two strong and powerful and brothers. You've seen one of them here. The second one would be unveiled to you soon but not today.

One thing, my youngest brother is my mirror when I'm not sure about WIW. If he says, "not good", I always go back to wear something else. Why am I telling you this? I honestly dunno! Lol.

Ankara Shirt & Shokoto

My youngest brother who is so keen about fashion decided to do away with some of his clothes, claiming his taste for fashion has changed. Whatever that means!

Me, I just jerjerly kukuma quietly grabbed one shirt and one shokoto.

My intention was to make some Ankara accessories out of them; but when I tried the shirt on, I loved it! I got inspired to wear the shirt because it fit me so perfectly. :)

See pictures of how I rocked it to church below:

While I was preparing this interesting post, Deuteronomy 22:5 came to play on my mind:

"A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God."

I remember, no I should say, I studied that in biblical times, clothing for males and females was only different in STYLES and details, not in kind (fabric).

Men did not wear trousers, and women did not adorn themselves with skirts and blouses. It was all about "HOW" they wore what.

It is very clear that God wants some sexual distinction apparent in men’s and women’s garments, but it is not very legitimate to say that all women’s “trousers” are wrong.

There are 2 major principles to be borne in mind.

Principle #1
As Christians, we should dress appropriately according to our gender. It will be uncool (an abomination, as the Bible puts it) for one to doubt our sex (gender) based on what we wear. Incidentally, this principle is dependent on cultures.

Principle #2
A godly man or woman should dress modestly, i.e., in a manner that does not solicit illicit sexual interest. As long as you're decently dressed, you're on the right track. Let modesty be your watchword.

And that was how I turned my brother's Ankara shokoto into a scarf. Scrap that. I literally tied my brother's shokoto on my head. Lol.

I don't wear shokoto on my waist, but I wear it on my head. What is the difference? Nothing!

That's my point. Trousers for women is no sin. (*rme* at the "born again" people) Except if God personally told you not to wear them, then it is sin for you.

Happy Sunday, sweetheart!

P.S. Just in case you're still wondering; "shokoto" means "trousers" in Yoruba.
