Just Say "Thank You"

Happy New week, sweethearts! How are you doing? Please say "fine. Thank you." Lol. Following a previous post on 'giving compliments', I thought it cool to write about receiving compliments. It's another issue we need to tackle.

Receiving Compliments

We all love to be noticed. OK, maybe you don't but I really do love to be noticed. Many people who are like me appreciate it when people admire us and compliment us. But few of us do not know how to accept these compliments gracefully. Instead, we downplay the compliments or even reject them.

There is a need for us to be conscious about how we receive a sincere compliment. We should learn to simply embrace the moment and show some gratitude. It could be God lavishing His praise on us. Who knows?

Observe the conversations below. Does any seem familiar to you?

Conversation 1
Someone: That’s a lovely jacket you have on.
You: This old thing?

Conversation 2
Someone: You look so pretty.
You: Who dash monkey banana?

Conversation 3
Someone: I like how slim and cute you look.
You: Me that have just gained extra weight.

Conversation 4
Someone: You did a great job on that project.
You: It didn’t turn out as well as I wanted.

Conversation 5
Someone: It was fun hanging out with you.
You: No way! I know I was boring.

Some people just hate to receive compliments. I mean, why is it so hard to appreciate the giver of the compliments? I think more often than not, how receptive we are to compliments is a reflection of our self-esteem and deep feelings of self-worth.

Specifically, compliments can make people with low self-esteem feel uncomfortable because they contradict their own self-views. Imagine receiving praise from somebody when you feel negative about yourself. You will feel the compliments are jarring and inauthentic. If you believe you’re unintelligent, someone lavishing you with praise about how smart you are will feel more like a tease than a compliment.

What's my point? My point is when you receive a nice compliment about anything you are doing, or when someone says positive things about you, don’t deny or contest it, and don’t try to shield away your feelings, instead thank them for the compliment and enjoy the praise while it lasts. You deserve it because . . . you're all that.

Always smile in appreciation when you receive a compliment, and you don’t necessarily have to return the compliment to the other person (especially when you don’t mean it).

I believe those who visit Heart Rays (my blog) are sweethearts, who deserve all the compliments they ever get. :) So let's put ourselves in check. Whenever we receive a kind word, we should never respond with "I know" or other negating comments.

We should always say "thank you", or even better, "thank you very much".

Have a pleasant week, sweeties.
The Lord will open doors of favour for you.
Stay positive. Stay inspired. Stay lovely.
